Feeling Unmotivated? It’s a Choice.

Feeling Unmotivated? It’s a Choice.

A woman jumping because she's feeling motivated, the opposite of feeling unmotivated

Feeling unmotivated lately? The Habit of Motivation is non-negotiable, and certainly not optional, if one wants to have a successful, rewarding and fulfilling life.

If I may be so bold, I would like to go one step further and suggest a name change – rather than the Habit of Motivation, let us practice the Habit of Being Motivated. Because like any other habit, choosing an action, behaviour, state of mind or emotion is always a choice.

Being Motivated is Contagious

If you think about it, being around someone who is motivated can be a very motivating experience. Because, more than likely, that energy, sense of enthusiasm and, perhaps even, exuberance, as we all know can be quite contagious.

Chances are if you think about the last time you were feeling unmotivated while hanging around someone who was quite energetic, you likely felt your level of enthusiasm increasing as well. Suddenly you weren’t stressing about those things that cause you angst, or hemorrhaging the small amount of energy you were trying to hang on to for dear life, because it was all you had left for the entire day.

In fact, somehow, they seemed to effortlessly melt away. Notice I didn’t say go away; they merely assumed a less consuming presence in your subconscious. And like it or not, this less consuming presence, was a conscious choice. So yes, you can do it.

Optimism is a Choice

Sometimes we are not even aware of how invigorating it is to be around some people, those naturally optimistic folks, who just seem to be always having a great day. Until that is, you find yourself in the company of those who perpetually are having bad days. Again, a conscious choice.

The difference? The title and plot of the de facto story each repeatedly tells themselves. The thoughts going through their mind all day shape how they feel, and as a result, how motivated they are.

Feeling motivated, and staying motivated is a conscious choice and one that requires constant work and attention to maintain.

Feeling unmotivated and staying that way is a conscious choice and one that requires constant work and attention to maintain.

Feeling Unmotivated Takes Effort, Too

See where this is going? Either state will require roughly the same amount of focus, attention to detail, diligence and effort to maintain consistent results.

Help me then to understand why anyone would expend the same amount of energy necessary to stay stagnant, while choosing to see all the limitations of people, relationships and things in this world?

For the same cost of admission, one could participate in an entirely different experience that would uplift them, their world and, undoubtedly, substantially boost their chances of happiness.

As a good friend of mine used to posit, “That’s the $64,000 question!”

If you’re looking to make the switch, give me a call or drop me an email and we can start today.

Let’s make a habit of meeting like this
