Reclaiming Certainty

Reclaiming Certainty

Certainty: Noun/ firm conviction that something is the case.

There are many things we need in order to feel safe, secure and in control of our lives: food, clothing, shelter, routine, familiarity, employment, income, socializing, attending events and family gatherings are just a few.

In the last few weeks we have had to accept that so much of what we have always taken for granted, of what we unequivocally believed will always be there, isn’t.

There is no person living today who has any experience of being in a world at war with a killer virus that threatens to potentially decimate our population while, at the same time, somebody hit the off-switch to the world’s economy.

There is an eeriness that has invaded our cities and towns, a sense of emptiness and abandonment without any hint of when we might expect a return to what we used to refer to as normal.

If there is one thing we humans depend on for both our psychological and physiological peace of mind it is the sense of certainty that comes with knowing what we have for sure, what is available for sure and what we can expect for sure.

That certainty has been pulled out from under us, and when what we know for sure is replaced by what we know no more, that uncertainty unsettles every fiber of our being.

Uncertainty means we don’t know when, we don’t know where, we don’t know why, and we don’t
know how.

We just know that everything we knew for sure is just not there anymore.

Which means we are all now on a steep learning curve desperately seeking normal when normal is nowhere to be found. And there are no experts to turn to for guidance because, while experts will be created, they do not exist at this present moment.

Numerous clients have asked for my thoughts and opinions regarding how to attempt to create normalcy out of insanity. The truth is I just don’t know, but what I do know is that all of us together are wiser than any of us individually and collectively we can figure this out.

Which is why, next Thursday, April 16 at 3:00 PM MST, I am hosting the first of a weekly series of on-line Zoom meetings called “Living with Uncertainty”.

My reason for doing this is twofold: firstly, I am hoping to form a growing community of idea-creators who together can help each other grow, stay strong, be resilient, be determined and be courageous as we fumble our way through turning today’s uncertainty into tomorrow’s certainty; secondly, I hope to become part of a caring community of people who seek opportunity to be of service to others, who spread kindness and consideration, who strive daily to, as Gandhi said, “become the change you wish to see in the world” and who believe it is possible to change the world one person at a time.

Please forward this link to anyone you would like to invite to join you in our new journey forward.

As we know, life does not always unfold as we believe it should. In fact, too often it is the contrary. Nonetheless, as Friedrich Nietzsche said, That which does not kill us will make us stronger.”

And stronger we will be.

Till we read again.
